Plant description : Botanical family : Malvaceae Cocoa tree, also known as Cacao tree, is a small evergreen indigenous to the tropics of South an Central America. Cocoa trees have been naturalized to many tropical areas around the world. The cocoa tree has dark green leaves and delicate flowers which are produced directly on the older branches and trunk. The flowers develop into long pods, which contain a large number of beans. The beans are the source of cocoa and cocoa butter which are made into the chocolate treats many of us love.

Characteristics : Solid at room temperature, cocoa butter melts at body temperature. It is velvety smooth, pale yellow in color and has a distinctive chocolate fragrance.

Uses : Cocoa butter is an extraordinary moisturizer for the skin. It can be used alone or combined with other natural ingredients. It is great for sensitive skin and chapped or burned lips or skin. After warming a cake of cocoa butter with warm water, it makes a wonderful shaving butter. For a luxurious bath, place a piece in the bathtub while you draw the water. Make sure to take the cocoa butter out of the water before you get in so you don't get the water too oily. To moisturize dry hair, rub a slice of cocoa butter between your hands, and then run your fingers through your hair. Cocoa butter makes an excellent base for herbal suppositories.
Safety : Nontoxic, avoid if you have an allergy to chocolate.
Storage : Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Refrigeration prolongs the freshness of all natural oils.
