Plant description : Botanical family : Rutaceae Citrus x aurantium, or Bitter Orange tree is a hybrid evergreen which is native to southern China and northeastern India, but is now widely cultivated in many subtropical and tropical areas around the globe. It produces thorny branches, glossy dark green leaves, and fragrant white flowers which develop into dimpled orange fruits.

Uses / Benefits : Soothes after-exercise stiffness. Helpful in relieving dyspepsia, or indigestion. Helps stabilize the nervous system and relieve nervous exhaustion. Reduces stress related symptoms such as nervous asthma, anxiety and depression. Used in bath and deodorant products. Useful in managing oily skin conditions such as acne.
Modes of Administration : Topical : massage, compress, ointments, skin care. Inhalation: direct inhalation, diffuser, oil vaporizer. Often used in natural perfume making.

History / Fun Facts : Citrus x aurantium, also known as Bitter Orange, gives us three delightful essential oils. Neroli is distilled from the sweet, fragrant blossoms, Petitgrain is distilled from the fresh green leaves and Bitter Orange is cold pressed from the peel of the fruit. The Seville orange (Citrus bigardia) is used in the production of marmalade, compotes and liqueurs.
