Botanical name :   Cinnamomum zeylanicum

Plant description :  Botanical family :  Lauraceae         Cinnamon is a tropical evergreen tree that grows to a height of about 25-60 feet.  It produces shiny green leathery leaves and clusters of small yellow flowers that develop into light blue berries.  Its leaves and bark are highly fragrant, and both are distilled for making essential oils.

Regions of Production :  Sri Lanka, Madagascar

Growing Practices :  Bark from trees indigenous to the region is harvested from the wild, away from chemical fertilizers or pesticides. 

Properties :  Antibacterial, anticoagulant, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory (COX2 inhibitor), anti-parasitic, antispasmodic, antiviral (Herpes, warts), circulatory stimulant, digestive, protects from gastric ulcers, warming.           Please refer to the Glossary for terms which may be new to you.

Uses / Benefits :     Cardiovascular disease, infections, digestive complaints, stomach ulcers, helps to open respiratory passages.  The oil is warming, so helps to relax tight muscles and decrease muscle pain.  Beneficial in regulating menstruation.  Helps to break down subcutaneous cellulite.  Also used as a disinfectant and insect repellents.  Popular for natural perfume making.

Modes of Administration :  Topical :  massage (always use a carrier), compress, bath, skin care.  Diffusion (usually in a blend).   Oral : may be taken orally under the supervision of a trained aromatherapy professional.  May be used in cooking.

Fragrant influences:  Uplifting, energizing, purifying, increases feelings of prosperity and abundance, stimulates psychic awareness, helps to reduce stress.  

Safety :  Avoid while pregnant and breast feeding.  May irritate sensitive skin, or nasal passages if inhaled directly.

Blends well with :  Bay, Benzoin, Cardamom, Clove Coriander, Geranium, Ginger, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lemongrass, Mandarin, Nutmeg, Orange, Patchouli, Petitgrain, Rose, Peru Balsam, Ylang Ylang.

History / Fun Facts :  Cinnamon essential oil is one of the oils in the legendary Four Thieves Vinegar oil blend.  The oil is said to have been used by a band of thieves during the 15th Century Bubonic Plague. The men rubbed the oil all over themselves, and were protected from their infected victims.  Look for TIMELESS Thieves Oil, our version of this classic blend.
